    Who the Africa Twin suits

On paper, the standard Africa Twin is aimed at riders who want a big-twin adventure bike that leans toward off-road use: 21/18-inch wire-spoked wheels, 9.1 inches of front travel and a narrow seat, according to Honda. Honda lists cornering ABS controlled by a six-axis IMU, six riding modes, Honda Selectable Torque Control, cruise control, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on a 6.5-inch touchscreen as standard. The 34.3-inch standard seat is tall, so read our seat height guide, and our adventure vs dual sport vs enduro explainer if you’re still choosing a category.

Strengths and trade-offs (from the spec sheet)

    • Long travel and off-road wheel sizes. Honda says the 9.1 inches of front travel is the most in the 1000cc ADV class.
    • Two seat heights. 34.3 or 33.5 inches, still taller than many road bikes.
    • DCT option. An automatic dual-clutch version is listed for $800 more.
    • Weight. 510 pounds curb is about 50 pounds more than the Ténéré 700’s published wet weight.

On paper, the CBR500R is a full-fairing sport bike in the A2-style 500cc class: a sporty riding position and supersport looks without the cost or weight of a 600cc or larger machine. Honda highlights its slipper/assist clutch, which it says cuts clutch lever effort by 45 percent compared with previous systems, standard ABS and a TFT display. If you’re working out what size bike to start on, our beginner motorcycle guide covers licensing, weight and engine size, and the seat height guide explains how to read the 31.1-inch figure.

Strengths and trade-offs (from the spec sheet)

    • Lower price for 2026. $1,000 below the 2025 model’s listed MSRP, per Honda.
    • Proper front end. A 41mm Showa SFF-BP inverted fork and twin 296mm discs with radial-mount four-piston calipers.

    • Heavier on paper. 421 pounds curb, more than the Ninja 500’s published curb weight.
    • No published power figure, so you can’t compare output from Honda’s US data alone.

    Who the KLR650 suits

The KLR650’s spec sheet is about range and simplicity rather than performance: a 6.1 gal tank (the biggest in this comparison), a single-cylinder engine with a five-speed gearbox, a 21-inch front wheel, hand guards and a rear carrier as standard, and no electronics beyond optional ABS. That suits riders who want a road-legal bike for long gravel routes, back roads and commuting, and who value a low price and a simple machine over power or rider aids. It’s tall (34.3 in) and, at 460.6 lb curb with ABS, much heavier than a small dual-sport such as Yamaha’s XT250, which our seat height guide lists at 291 lb wet. Our adventure vs dual sport vs enduro guide explains where a dual-sport like this sits, and whether it’s street-legal and how it’s titled is something to check with your state DMV.

Strengths and trade-offs (from the spec sheet)

    • Range. 6.1 gal of fuel capacity.
    • Price. $6,999 is $4,000 less than the Ténéré 700 below.
    • Long suspension travel. 7.9 in front and 8.0 in rear, with rebound and preload adjustment at the shock.
    • Modest output. 40 hp and 39.1 lb-ft, both at low rpm (6,000 and 4,500 rpm).
    • Five-speed gearbox. One fewer gear than most twins in the class.
    • No traction control or ride modes listed.

    Yamaha Ténéré 700 (2026) $10,999 689cc inline twin 34.4 in 459 lb wet 4.2 gal Yamaha
    • KLR650 S: the same price and engine, with a 32.1 in seat (2.2 in lower). Kawasaki lists shorter suspension travel to get there (6.7 in front, 7.0 in rear) and 7.3 in of ground clearance instead of 8.3 in. That’s a straight trade of off-road capability for reach.
    • Yamaha Ténéré 700: $4,000 more for a 689cc twin, a fully adjustable 43mm fork, 9.4 in of ground clearance, selectable ABS, traction control and a 6.3-inch TFT, per Yamaha, at almost the same seat height and weight. It carries less fuel. See our 2026 Yamaha Ténéré 700 overview.

The gap between those two figures is optional equipment: BMW’s option list includes DSA electronic suspension, adaptive vehicle height control, heated seats and Headlight Pro. Usable tank volume 5.0 gal
    Reserve approx. 1 gal

BMW also publishes an “inner leg curve” (74.8″). This is generally understood as the leg length needed to reach from one footpeg, over the seat, to the other, so it reflects seat width as well as height. Our seat height guide explains why.

Who the R 1300 GS suits

The R 1300 GS is for riders who want one bike that covers long highway days, two-up touring and gravel roads, and who are happy to pay for it. The standard equipment list is long: BMW lists the TFT with Connectivity, LED matrix headlight, Dynamic Traction Control, full integral ABS Pro, four riding modes (Eco, Rain, Road, Enduro), Hill Start Control, Dynamic Brake Control, Dynamic Cruise Control, tire pressure monitoring, KeylessRide and heated grips. It’s tall (33.4″ seat) and weighs 523 lbs road ready, so it’s not a bike for newer riders. For how adventure bikes differ from dual-sports and enduros, see our adventure vs dual sport vs enduro guide.

Strengths and trade-offs (from the spec sheet)

    • Power and torque. 145 hp and 110 lb-ft from 1,300 cc.
    • Shaft drive. No chain to adjust or lubricate.
    • Payload. 502 lbs with standard equipment, which matters for two-up touring with luggage.
    • Options add up fast. BMW’s own “as shown” price is $7,670 above base.
    • Smaller tank than the Adventure. 5.0 gal against 7.9 gal on the R 1300 GS Adventure.
    • Cast wheels as standard. The base GS has cast aluminum wheels; the Adventure lists cross-spoke wheels.

    • R 1300 GS Adventure: $3,400 more, a 7.9 gal tank, longer suspension travel (8.3″ / 8.7″) and cross-spoke wheels, but 70 lbs heavier and taller. BMW also lists an Automated Shift Assistant among its options.
    • Pan America 1250 Special: $396 cheaper than the base GS with more published power (150 HP), but Harley-Davidson quotes a laden seat height (with a rider aboard), so it isn’t directly comparable with BMW’s unladen figure. Its 578 lb. running-order weight is heavier than the base GS on paper.

Harley-Davidson quotes a laden seat height (with a rider aboard), while most other brands quote it unladen. That’s one reason Harley figures look low next to other bikes; our seat height guide explains the difference.

    Who the Street Glide suits

This is a long-distance two-up touring bike, and the spec sheet reads like it: a 6-gallon tank, 2.42 cu ft of luggage capacity, a fairing with built-in speakers and Apple CarPlay, and 130 ft-lbs of torque at just 3250 rpm. It’s a very heavy motorcycle at 811 lb in running order, so it suits experienced riders who are comfortable managing that weight at walking pace, in parking lots and on slopes. Harley-Davidson’s Safety tab describes Vehicle Hold Control for hill starts and its cornering-enhanced Rider Safety Enhancements (ABS, linked braking, traction control and drag-torque slip control); check with a dealer exactly which are fitted to the trim you’re looking at.

Strengths and trade-offs (from the spec sheet)

    • Low laden seat. 26.4 in. with a rider aboard makes reaching the ground easier than the weight suggests.
    • Big low-rpm torque. 130 ft-lbs at 3250 rpm, measured to SAE J1349.
    • Touring kit included. Bags, fairing audio, a 12.3-inch screen and phone connectivity.
    • Weight. 811 lb in running order is the defining trade-off.
    • Cornering clearance. 32° of lean each way and 5.5 in. of ground clearance are typical for a bagger, but far less than a sport-touring or adventure bike.
    • Navigation is extra. Embedded navigation is sold separately, per the spec table.

Street Glide vs Road Glide (and the Pan America for contrast)

The Road Glide is the Street Glide’s closest rival, and it comes from the same showroom: same engine, but what Harley-Davidson calls a “fixed Sharknose fairing” instead of the Batwing. We’ve added Harley’s Pan America 1250 Special to show how different an adventure-touring alternative is.

Model (model year) US MSRP (as listed 22 Oct 2026) Engine Seat height, laden Weight, in running order Fuel capacity Source
    Harley-Davidson Street Glide (2026) Starting at $24,999 Milwaukee-Eight 117; 105 HP 26.4 in. 811 lb. 6 gal. Harley-Davidson
    Harley-Davidson Road Glide (2026) Starting at $25,999 Milwaukee-Eight 117; 105 HP 26.6 in. 838 lb. 6 gal. Harley-Davidson
    Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 Special (2026) Starting at $19,999 Revolution Max 1250; 150 HP Low/High Seat Position; 31.1 in./32 in. 578 lb. 5.6 gal. Harley-Davidson
    • Road Glide: $1,000 more and 27 lb heavier on paper, with the same engine output and fuel economy. The practical difference is the fairing: Harley describes the Road Glide’s Sharknose as fixed, so it doesn’t turn with the bars the way a handlebar-mounted fairing does. Harley lists a narrower 37.2 in. width and a slightly higher 26.6 in. laden seat. We also have an archive page on the 2023 Road Glide ST (older model year, not re-verified).
    • Pan America 1250 Special: $5,000 less and 233 lb lighter, with more power and 42° of lean each way, but a much taller seat and a very different riding style. See our adventure vs dual sport vs enduro guide for what adventure-touring bikes are built for.

    Who the Speed 400 suits

The Speed 400 is for riders who want a small-capacity bike that looks like a classic roadster rather than a sportbike or streetfighter. On paper it’s easy to live with: a 790 mm (31.10 in) seat, 375 lb wet, a slip-and-assist clutch, ABS front and rear, and a 10,000-mile service interval. That last point matters for running costs, and it’s the longest interval quoted in the comparison below. New riders should check their state’s licensing rules first; our beginner motorcycle guide explains the steps, and the seat height guide helps you read the 790 mm figure.

Strengths and trade-offs (from the spec sheet)

    • Long service interval. 10,000 miles or 12 months is the longest interval quoted by any bike in this comparison (KTM and Yamaha don’t quote one on these pages).
    • Quality chassis parts. A 43mm big-piston upside-down fork, a radial four-piston front caliper and an external-reservoir shock, per Triumph.
    • Retro instruments. An analog speedometer with an LCD screen rather than a TFT; some riders will want that, others won’t.
    • Limited adjustment. Only rear preload is listed as adjustable.
    • Model-year clarity. Triumph’s US pages don’t date their spec sheets, so double-check the spec on any bike you buy.

    Yamaha MT-03 (2026) $4,999 + $650 destination 321cc inline twin 30.7 in 373 lb wet Yamaha
    • KTM 390 Duke: the same money and nearly the same engine size, with more power on paper (45 PS vs 40PS), more adjustable suspension and a TFT, but a taller seat. It’s the sportier choice on the spec sheet. Read our 2026 KTM 390 Duke overview.
    • Yamaha MT-03: about $500 cheaper with a lower 30.7 in seat and a 321cc twin. Yamaha doesn’t publish its power output.

    Who the 390 Duke suits

The spec sheet points to a rider who wants a light, sharp-handling small bike with more adjustability than usual at this price: a fork with compression and rebound adjustment, a rebound- and preload-adjustable shock, a five-inch TFT, ride modes and, per KTM, Launch Control in TRACK mode. It’s a single, so expect a different character from the twins it competes with. Riders new to motorcycling should read our beginner motorcycle guide; the 390 Duke’s weight is modest, but its seat (820/800 mm) is taller than some rivals, so see our seat height guide for what that number means in practice.

Strengths and trade-offs (from the spec sheet)

    • Adjustable suspension. Adjustable compression and rebound damping at the front is unusual in this price range; the rivals below list no fork adjustment at all.
    • Strong brake spec. A 320 mm front disc with a four-piston radial caliper, the largest front disc here.
    • Light. 165 kg fully fueled.
    • Metric-only data. KTM’s US page gives weight, seat height and wheelbase in metric only, which makes side-by-side comparison with US-unit spec sheets harder. Don’t rely on rounded conversions you find elsewhere.
    • Freight. At $600, the freight charge is a bigger share of the price than on more expensive bikes.

390 Duke vs Triumph Speed 400 vs Kawasaki Z500

Model (model year) US MSRP (as listed 22 Oct 2026) Engine Power (as published) Seat height Weight (as published) Source
KTM 390 Duke (2026) 5,499.00 USD 398.7 cm³ single 45 PS 820/800 mm 165 kg fully fueled KTM
    Triumph Speed 400 (current US model) $5,495.00 398.15 cc single 39.5 HP (40PS) @ 8,000 RPM 31.10 in (790 mm) 375 lb (170kg) wet Triumph
    Kawasaki Z500 ABS (2027) $5,799 451cc parallel twin 51.0 hp @ 10,000 rpm (ISO 4106) 30.9 in 368.2 lb curb (50-State) Kawasaki
    • Triumph Speed 400: almost exactly the same price and engine size, but a retro roadster rather than a streetfighter. Triumph lists a lower 790 mm seat and a 43mm big-piston fork with no listed adjustment. See our Triumph Speed 400 overview.
    • Kawasaki Z500: $300 more for a 451cc twin with the highest published power of the three. Kawasaki lists only rear preload adjustment.

Power figures in this table use different units and test methods (KTM in PS, Triumph EC, Kawasaki ISO 4106), so treat them as a rough guide rather than an exact ranking.

Kawasaki’s curb weight includes all fluids and more than 90 percent of a full tank of fuel. Kawasaki notes that California evaporative emissions equipment adds approximately 2.2 lb, which is why there are separate 50-State and 49-State figures. Kawasaki also says its horsepower figure is measured to ISO 4106, which can read higher than SAE methods.

    Who the Ninja 500 suits

The Ninja 500 is a full-fairing sportbike with a relaxed position by sportbike standards: Kawasaki describes elevated clip-on bars and a forward footpeg position, and a slim seat and narrow tank junction for ground reach. With a 30.9 in seat and a curb weight under 380 lb, it’s the kind of bike many riders shortlist as a first street bike after training, or as a light commuter for experienced riders. If you’re comparing it with an even smaller bike, our beginner motorcycle guide covers what to weigh up, and our seat height guide puts the 30.9 in figure in context. If you’d rather not have a fairing, Kawasaki’s 2027 Z500 ABS uses the same 451cc engine figures in a naked bike from $5,799.

Strengths and trade-offs (from the spec sheet)

    • Light for a 451cc twin. 377.1 lb curb (ABS, 50-State) with nearly a full tank.
    • Published power and torque. Kawasaki is the only brand in the comparison below that publishes both, which makes the 51.0 hp / 31.7 lb-ft figures easy to check.
    • Basic suspension. A non-adjustable 41mm telescopic fork; only the rear spring preload adjusts.
    • Single front disc. A 310mm semi-floating disc with a 2-piston caliper, which is typical for the class.
    • Electronics are basic on the standard bike. No traction control is listed; the TFT display and keyless start are SE-only.

    Honda CBR500R (2026) $6,399 471cc parallel twin 31.1 inches 421 pounds curb 4.5 gallons Honda / price
    • Yamaha YZF-R3: $400 less and almost the same seat height and weight, but with a much smaller 321cc engine. Yamaha doesn’t publish power for the R3. We also have an archive page on the YZF-R3 MotoGP Edition (older model year).
    • Honda CBR500R: $500 more, a larger 4.5-gallon tank, dual 296mm front discs and a 41mm Showa SFF-BP fork, per Honda. It’s also the heaviest of the three on paper at 421 pounds curb.

    Who the Rebel 500 suits

The number that defines this bike is the seat: 27.2 in. is lower than every bike in our seat height comparison, where the lowest published figure is 30.7 in. Honda’s feature release says the frame is designed to be as narrow as possible around the rider’s inseam, which also helps reach. Add a manual six-speed, ABS and an assist/slipper clutch (listed in Honda’s features release) and it’s an obvious shortlist bike for shorter riders, new riders who have done their training, and anyone who wants a relaxed cruiser position without a heavyweight V-twin. Honda says it’s designed for a single rider with a solo seat; a passenger seat and pegs are available as Honda accessories. See our beginner motorcycle guide if this would be your first bike.

Strengths and trade-offs (from the spec sheet)

    • Very low seat and moderate weight. 27.2 in. and 414 pounds curb, with a full tank.
    • Shared engine. The bore, stroke and compression ratio are the same as Honda’s 2026 CBR500R sportbike, a well-established 471cc twin.
    • Limited suspension travel at the back. 3.7 inches of rear travel from dual shocks with two-step preload adjusters (per Honda) is typical of a low cruiser, but it’s less than the 5.5-inch fork and well short of a standard or sport bike.
    • Small tank. 3.0 gallons is the smallest in the comparison below.
    • Solo seat as standard. Two-up riding needs accessories.

Rebel 500 vs Kawasaki Eliminator vs Honda CBR500R

The Kawasaki Eliminator is the most direct cruiser rival in the US. We’ve included the CBR500R to show how the same Honda engine is packaged as a sportbike.

Model (model year) US MSRP (as listed 22 Oct 2026) Engine Seat height Weight (as published) Fuel capacity Source
    Honda Rebel 500 (2026) $6,799 (SE $6,999) 471cc parallel twin 27.2 in. 414 pounds curb 3.0 gallons Honda

    Honda CBR500R (2026) $6,399 471cc parallel twin 31.1 inches 421 pounds curb 4.5 gallons Honda / price
    • Kawasaki Eliminator: the same starting price, a slightly higher 28.9 in seat and a lighter 388.1 lb curb weight (Kawasaki’s curb figure is with more than 90 percent of a full tank). Kawasaki publishes 51 hp, measured to ISO 4106. Its 18-inch front wheel (130/70-18) and 59.8 in wheelbase compare with the Rebel’s 16-inch front and 58.7 in.
    • Honda CBR500R: cheaper and with a bigger 4.5-gallon tank, but a 31.1-inch seat and a sport riding position. Pick on riding style rather than engine.
