Who the YZF-R7 suits

On paper, the R7 sits between 300–500cc sport bikes and 1000cc superbikes. It uses the same 689cc engine figures as Yamaha’s MT-07 naked bike but with full fairing, a 32.7-in seat and a fully adjustable fork. Yamaha also lists customizable YRC ride modes and Y-TRAC Rev compatibility for track riders. If you’re new to riding, read our beginner motorcycle guide and seat height guide first.

Strengths and trade-offs (from the spec sheet)

  • Electronics for the class. IMU-based rider aids and a quickshifter for clutchless up- and downshifts, per Yamaha.
  • Adjustable suspension at both ends.
  • Taller and pricier than the MT-07 that shares its engine: 32.7 in vs 31.7 in, and $800 more.
  • Small tank: 3.7 gal, offset by an estimated 59 MPG.
