Who the MT-09 suits
On paper, the MT-09 is a step up from twin-cylinder middleweights: a three-cylinder engine and an IMU-based rider-aid suite (four-mode traction control, slide control, lift control and a two-mode brake control system, per Yamaha), yet it weighs only 22 lb more wet than the MT-07. That makes it a likely choice for experienced riders rather than beginners. If you’re still deciding on size, start with our beginner motorcycle guide.
Strengths and trade-offs (from the spec sheet)
- Adjustable fork. Preload, compression and rebound adjustment up front, which the MT-07 doesn’t list.
- Electronics. Six-axis IMU and a five-inch TFT with smartphone connectivity, per Yamaha.
- Small tank. 3.7 gal with an estimated 48 MPG.
- Taller seat than the MT-07: 32.5 in vs 31.7 in.
